Lucknow, May 20: Local administration in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh immediately put a ban on the sale of liquor brand ‘Madhuri-442’, following the death of 10 people due to consumption of spurious liquor in the state, reported a news agency ANI.  Further, action will also be taken against those found selling and storing the liquor brand. “Local administration puts an immediate ban on sale of liquor brand ‘Madhuri-442’ following the death of 10 people due to consumption of spurious liquor in Kanpur. Action to be taken against those found selling & storing the liquor brand,” the ANI tweet said.

At least 10 people died and 16 were taken seriously ill after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Kanpur district and its neighbouring Kanpur Dehat on Saturday. In Kanpur district, four people died in the hooch tragedy yesterday. This morning, another person died at Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, taking the death toll to five. In the neighbouring Kanpur Dehat district, five people died in Matauli, Maghaipurwa and Bhanwarpur villages after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, while seven are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Sunday arrested 11 people after these incidents came to light where illicit liquor has claimed lives of 10 people in the state. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma visited Ursula Hospital in Kanpur to meet six people who were hospitalised after consuming the illicit liquor and gave Rs 50,000 each as compensation to the victims.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate Surendra Singh has said, “We have raided the house of one of the accused from where cartons of illegal liquor have been found.”
