Shamli, March 11: Muzaffarnagar riots accused and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suresh Rana is trailing from Thana Bhawan constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Suresh Rana alias Suresh Kumar is a controversial leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Thana Bhawan constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Suresh Rana, a 46-year-old BJP leader is not a stranger to controversies. In 2013, a non-bailable warrant was issued against Suresh Rana for violating prohibitory orders and instigating communal tension during the Muzaffarnagar riots. In 2015, Suresh Rana surrendered before Muzaffarnagar court after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him.
After the communal riots of Muzaffarnagar, Suresh Rana has emerged out as a local Hindutva icon. Earlier this year, a case was filed against Suresh Rana for hate speech after claiming that he would impose a curfew ion Deoband, Kairana and Moradabad if he won the upcoming 2017 assembly elections.
Some reports suggest that BJP national president, Amit Shah, during his visit to Thana Bhawan on Sunday, had asked Suresh Rana to campaign on 100 seats after the first phase, which sends a clear signal how important he is for BJP to win the state assembly elections. In 2012, Suresh Rana won the assembly elections with a narrow margin, by a few hundred votes. The current election is even more challenging for Suresh Rana, as his team is confident the BSP and the RLD have fielded a Muslim candidate it will polarise the votes, while the Samajwadi Party-Congress has fielded Professor Sudheer Panwar, a former member of state Planning Commission, which was also handpicked by Akhilesh Yadav, as a candidate to contest from Thana Bhawan.
Last month the Election Commission had issued a show cause notice to Suresh Rana over his curfew remark. The Election Commission has also asked Suresh Rana to answer, as to why action should not be initiated against him for violation of model code of conduct.
The polling in Thana-Bhawan, Shamli district was conducted in the first phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections for 403 seats was conducted in seven phases, from February 11 and ended on March 9.
