Lucknow, March 1: Adding momentum to his campaigning in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing two political rallies in Maharajganj and Deoria on Wednesday. Eastern Uttar Pradesh bears a special significance for Bharatiya Janta Party in the sense that the region includes traditional bastions like Gorakhpur and Varanasi.
Deoria seat was added to Bharatiya Janta Party‘s fold in previous assembly elections in 2012 when Janmejai Singh of BJP delivered a crushing defeat to his nearest contender Pramod Singh of Bahujan Samaj Party. Janmejai Singh defeated Pramod Singh by a huge margin of 23000 votes. Samajwadi Party has fielded J P Jaiswal to contest the seat.
However, Maharaj Ganj remains to be out of its fold as it is one of the traditional seats of Samajwadi Party. SP has won the seat in assembly elections of 2007 and 2012. BJP remained third on the seat by bagging 45191 votes by its candidate Alok in assembly elections of 2012. Maharajganj, being a reserved constituency poses a special challenge to BJP as the party lost the seat in 2012. This time, the Bharatiya Janta Party has fielded Jai Mangal Kanojia to contest the seat. It would be also interesting to see if BJP could repeat its performance of Lok Sabha elections in 2014 where it managed to make a dent in Dalit vote bank of Bahujan Samaj Party.
The sixth phase of polling would be conducted in Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau and Ballia districts of Uttar Pradesh.
While the Bharatiya Janta Party will be facing a tough challenge from opponents in its stronghold Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bahujan Samaj Party, too, will be facing the test given its tickets allocations. Mayawati has allotted more than 90 seats to Muslims in assembly elections. The Samajwadi Party is no mood to take a dent on traditional seats like Azamgarh.The saffron party is holding incessant rallies in the region to repeat the performance of Lok Sabha elections.
The voting for Uttar Pradesh assembly elections will conclude on March 8. The result of the assembly elections will be announced on March 11.
