Stakes are high for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh bye-elections. To snatch Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabah seats from the BJP, arch rivals the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) contested bypolls together. Gorakhpur bypoll is a battle of prestige for the BJP as the parliamentary seat had been represented by Yogi Adityanath five times.
In Uttar Pradesh, the bypolls were necessitated after CM Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya vacated their seats in Gorakhpur and Phulpur, respectively, on taking office. In Gorakhpur bye-election, the contest is between Upendra Shukla from the BJP, Praveen Nishad from the SP and Surhita Chatterjee Karim from the Congress. Candidates in the fray for the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat are BJP’s Kaushalendra Singh Patel, Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel from the SP and Manish Mishra from the Congress.
In Bihar bypolls, much is at stake for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Lalu Prasad Yadav’s party had won two of three seats that went to bye-elections in Bihar. In absence of Lalu Yadav, who is behind bars in connection with two fodder scam cases, his son and leader of the opposition Tejashwi Yadav spearheaded RJD’s poll campaign in Bihar bypolls.
In Araria bye-election, the electoral contest is between RJD candidate Sarfaraz Alam and BJP nominee Pradeep Kumar Singh. The parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of Alam’s father and RJD MP Mohammed Taslimuddin. Alam was a sitting legislator of the ruling JD(U). Last month, he left the party, and the assembly, to join the RJD. BJP candidate had secured 2.61 lakh votes in 2014 Lok Sabha polls against Taslimuddin who had got 4 lakh votes.
In Jehanabad bypoll, the RJD fielded his Uday Yadav, who is in a direct battle with JD(U)’s Abhiram Sharma. Sharma had won the seat in 2010 when his party was an ally of the BJP. The Assembly seat fell vacant after the death of RJD Legislator Mundrika Yadav.
The bypoll in Bhabhua has been necessitated following the death of the BJP legislator Anand Bhushan Pandey. To retain the Assembly seat, the BJP fielded his widow Rinki Rani Pandey. The RJD offered Bhabua seat to the Congress at the last moment which nominated Shambhu Patel for the bypoll.
