New Delhi, Dec 1: For the Congress ‘vikas’ (development) may have gone crazy in Gujarat but Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes his party’s super show in Uttar Pradesh civic body polls, results for which were announced on Friday, was because of his government’s and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s developmental policies. The BJP won 14 of 16 municipal corporations in Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took a dig at the Congress and said the party which was daydreaming of winning the Gujarat Assembly polls has failed to even open an account in the UP municipal corporation polls.
“Jo gujarat jeetne ka sapna dekh rahe hain unka yahan amethi mein bhi soopda saaf ho gaya hai,” he said ridiculing the Congress, which lost even in the party pocket borough of Amethi.
The elections results are certain to bolster BJP’s prospects in the Gujarat Assembly elections scheduled to be held later this month. The BJP has already indicated that it will use the results to target the Congress in PM Modi and Amit Shah’s home state.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who is campaiging tirelessly in Gujarat, is likely to face a more belligerent BJP which will highlight his party’s dismal performance particularly in Amethi. The Congress failed to win even a single local body seat in Amethi, the Lok Sabha seat from where Rahul Gandhi has been elected thrice. The 47-year-old Congress president-in-waiting is yet to react to the Uttar Pradesh civic election results. (Also Read: UP Remains BJP Citadel, Rivals Bite the Dust in Urban Civic Elections)
Return of BSP
While the Congress’ poor show continued, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) surprised everyone with its performance in local body polls. The party which was decimated in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and the 2017 state assembly elections made a comeback winning two mayoral seats. The party also stood first on over 100 local bodies.
The BSP’s performance is remarkable to say the least considering party supremo hardly campaigned during the elections. On the other hand, CM Yogi Adityanath campaigned extensively propagating his 7-month-old government’s performance. (Also Read: UP Civic Polls Result: Who Said What)
Others
The Samajwadi Party still appears to be reeling by the aftermath of huge infighting that the party witnessed in the run up to the February/March Assembly elections. The party failed to open its account in the mayoral elections and it won just 81 local bodies of 652 local bodies. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also made some forays with two seats in the municipal polls.
