Lucknow, Apr 30: After the poor performance of the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2017, the Congress on Saturday organised a post-poll review to discuss the reasons for the party’s loss in the Assembly elections. In the Saturday’s meeting, most of the Congress candidates who lost their seats in the Assembly polls urged the party to contest the upcoming Uttar Pradesh civic elections without any alliance. The post-poll review was also attended by All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad.
In the meeting, the party workers said that the party must now focus on rebuilding the party in the state and it must contest the civic polls without any alliance to understand where the party stands. Sources state that majority of the people attending the meeting unanimously demanded that the party must contest alone in the civic body polls. Assuring the party workers of conveying their demands to the party high command, the senior Congress leaders asked the party workers to be dedicated towards the party and work hard in the upcoming civic body elections.

“The main topic of discussion in today’s meeting was whether the party should contest the upcoming local bodies elections on its own or in an alliance. The leaders were unanimous that we should contest alone. Now, the party leadership will issue detailed guidelines on how to go about it,” Congress spokesperson Dwijendra Tripathi was quoted by The Indian Express.
The Uttar Pradesh local body elections are likely to be held in June. Ahead of the upcoming civic polls, the Congress is trying to build momentum among its workers who have been demotivated after the poor performance of the party in the state assembly elections. The senior party leaders asked the workers to not lose hope towards the party but at the same time asked them to be cautious and ensure that the votes do not get divided in the favour of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Alliance responsible for the loss
In the meeting organised after facing a rout in the state assembly polls, most of the party workers and leaders blamed the party’s alliance with the Samajwadi Party to be responsible for party’s poor performance. The workers also asked the party high command to take strict action against those who were indulged in indiscipline during elections.
Most of the volunteers demanded the party to expel leaders indulged in indiscipline actions and also spoke about similar actions taken by the ally Samajwadi Party.
