Bijnor, January 12: This is new. A 19 year old girl hailing from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh, attacked her 21 year old boyfriend by throwing acid on him, after he refused her proposal marriage. The shocking incident occurred in Bijnor itself on Sunday night. The girl called her boy friend home and burnt his face with acid. An FIR has been lodged against the gril Afreen in the Mandawar police station. Kumar, whose face has suffered minor disfiguration, is in the hospital, but is out of danger.
Afreen had invited her boy friend Sooraj over for her birthday party, to which he readily agreed. But little did he know that the jilted Afreen had something else in mind for him. Sooraj, who suffered 20% burn injuries, recounted his ordeal and said, “I am Hindu and Afreen is Muslim. We cannot get married as we belong to different faiths. I told her that my marriage has been settled and this angered her.” Narrating the events of the fateful evening Sooraj said that he was lucky to have been in the company of a friend, Arjun, who rushed him to the hospital, in time. “She invited me for a birthday party to her house in Inampura on Sunday night. I attended her party and took dinner. After dinner when I set out for my house, she called me on my mobile phone and asked me to come back. I returned to her house as I did not suspect anything. But when I reached her place, she poured acid over my face. It was with my friend Arjun Kumar who rushed me to hospital. I don’t know what she would have done had he not been there”, recounted Sooraj.
Sooraj and Afreen studied in the same college, where they had met. The couple had been in a relationship for the past one and half years and Afreen wanted to get married to Sooraj. Initially, Sooraj also wanted to get married to Afreen, but his family wouldn’t agree to the match. After being unable to convince his parents about it, Sooraj finally gave up and called the relationship off. “The police has registered a case against the girl under section 326A (which lays down punishment for acid throwing, a minimum of 10 years in prison) based on the complaint of Sooraj’s father Mahendra Singh. Police are probing the matter”, said circle officer Ramanand Kushwah.
