The government of Uttar Pradesh has begun doing preparations for a detailed high-tech plan to ensure that only genuine citizens of the state receive welfare benefits. The Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, over the last week attended some high-level meetings, stressing that the resources of the state must go to its legitimate citizens first. This step is being taken to stop the infiltrators and individuals with forged or fake documents from getting Aadhaar cards, subsidised rations or housing benefits.
The officials of the state have mentioned that the plan will develop a digital security grid, which will eventually prevent the infiltrators from getting Aadhaar cards and subsidised rations. The strategy is aimed at the identification and dismantling of groups that help the outsiders get fake or forged documents about the citizenship. The Chief Minister also highlighted that the resources of the state only belong to those citizens who are rightful. He also instructed the officials to strengthen the verification process with the help of biometrics at an advanced level.
The Uttar Pradesh government has mentioned that this initiative’s objective is to target illegal immigrants. The officials also believe that the process will strengthen the security by reducing crimes that are committed with the help of forged documents. They have also been guided to make sure that welfare schemes are accessible to the deserving citizens or beneficiaries only.
At this, the parties of opposition have shared their concerns and criticised the move. The senior leader of the Samajwadi Party, Rajendra Chaudhry, said, “The government should share clear data on the number of infiltrators identified so far and the legal framework under which detention centres are being established.”
They reported that this step may be aimed at inculcating fear among the minority groups in the state. The leaders belonging to the Samajwadi Party and Congress stated that poor migrants who do not have documents may get targeted wrongly because of this step. The parties have also asked for heightened transparency concerning data to stop the misuse. However, the government has defended its move, stating it will develop a secure environment.
