Kanpur, Nov 30: A journalist was shot dead by unknown assailants in Kanpur’s Bilhaur on Thursday. Following the attack, he succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital, reports claimed.

Identified as Naveen Gupta, he was shot at by three to four bike-borne assailants. According to Additional Director General of Police, teams have been formed to nab the culprits. Gupta was sitting in his hosiery shop when he was attacked.

Gupta was the Bilhaur correspondent for the vernacular newspaper Hindustan. Although Hindustan stated the name as ‘Naveen Gupta’, ANI quoted the senior police official calling the murdered journalist, Naveen Srivastava.

“Journalist Naveen Srivastava was shot at by 3-4 assailants while he was sitting in his hosiery shop. We hope to nab the criminals as soon as possible. DM & SSP of Kanpur Nagar are already on the spot,” the senior official said. “Couple of local police teams formed to crack the case,” he added.

Later, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to follow up the investigation of killing of the journalist.

Earlier this month, a journalist was killed in Tripura when a security official allegedly shot at him during an altercation. Following this, the BJP called Tripura government ‘jungle raj’. Ram Madhav from the BJP also censured media for not giving due coverage and respect to the death of Tripura journalist Sudip Dutta.

Another journalist Santanu Bhowmick was killed in Tripura while covering an Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) event.

In October, senior journalist KJ Singh was found murdered at his residence. In September this year, unknown assailants killed senior journalist Gauri Lankesh, which led to a mass outcry against killing of journalists.
