New Delhi: The Lok Sabha Elections 2024 are underway and to ensure that the general public votes for them, the different political parties are continuously campaigning for their candidates. There is a lot of political turmoil in the different states of India with respect to the candidates contesting from different constituencies among other things – all eyes are on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was expected to contest the elections from Amethi but at the last minute, it was announced that he will be contesting from Raebareli. Currently, Rahul Gandhi is in his constituency and is campaigning for the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha Elections 2024. While addressing the public, Rahul Gandhi has revealed why he has chosen to contest from Raebareli instead of Amethi….
While addressing the public, Rahul Gandhi called Raebareli the work-place of his mother Sonia Gandhi and his grandmother, Indira Gandhi. In his words, “This (Raebareli) is the ‘karma-bhoomi’ of both my mothers. This is the reason I have come to contest from Raebareli. First time in the history of our country, BJP-RSS people want to end our Constitution. Their leaders have clearly said that if they come to power they will change the Constitution…”

Highlighting the importance of the Raebareli constituency for Indian National Congress, Rahul Gandhi said, “…Ours is a 100-year-old relationship with Raebareli. A few days ago when I was sitting with my mother, I told her that I said in a video that I have two mothers – Sonia ji and Indira ji. My mother did not like this, but I explained to her that a mother is the one who shows the path to the child and also protects her. Both my mother and Indira Ji did this for me.”
The Congress, on May 3, announced Rahul as a candidate from Raebareli and loyalist KL Sharma from Amethi, keeping Priyanka as well as Vadra out of the electoral contest. Sharma is pitted against Union Minister Smriti Irani, who trounced Rahul in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Amethi seat has been represented by Rahul since 2004, and he remained a member of Parliament from the constituency until 2019. His father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, too, was an elected member of Amethi in the Lower House from 1981 till his death in 1991.
The Raebareli constituency will be going for polling as part of the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha Election 2024 on May 20, in the fifth phase of the general elections.
