Lucknow, Apr 19: A man allegedly ‘gifted’ his daughter to his friends in Sitapur and later, joined them to gangrape her. One of the three accused has been arrested while efforts are on to nab the others. The incident was reported on Monday. It comes at a time when the country is grappling under the angst over the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir and Unnao rape case.
According to the police, the man, who is in his late 50s, visited a fair in Kamalpur area with the 35-year-old victim on April 15 evening. Later, he called up his friend Maan Singh – a history-sheeter – to the spot. Both then convinced the victim to go with them to another friend’s (Meraj) residence where she was gangraped.
All the three men, including victim’s father, took turns to rape her. She was kept confined to the house for 18 hours. However, she finally managed to escape on Monday evening. On reaching home, she narrated the ordeal to her mother. An FIR was registered in the matter on the same day. Out of the three, the police arrested Meraj, who is in early 40s and works as a quack in Kamalpur, on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Maan Singh and victim’s father are on the run.
As per Sitapur SP Sureshrao A Kulkarni, the victim had been married off 16 years ago but returned to her maternal home within two years of marriage after a feud with her husband. She is a mother to a 14-year-old boy.
Her father was banished from the village in November 2017 after he was accused of having an incestuous relationship with his daughter. He was arrested on same charges. The man was released on bail in February.
Kathua Rape Case
An eight-year-old girl was abducted and held captive inside a temple in Rasana village of Hiranagar on January 10. She was drugged and raped repeatedly before being murdered. Her body was found dumped in forest on January 17. On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir police produced eight accused before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Kathua. The next hearing will take place on April 28.
Unnao Rape Case
A 16-year-old girl has accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of allegedly raping her at his residence in Unnao. The victim and his family members had tried to commit suicide outside the residence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The victim’s father was arrested by police on April 5. He died in custody on April 9. The CBI had registered three FIRs in the case. Sengar was sent to 7-day police custody on April 14.
PM Narendra Modi Condemns Rape Incidents
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condemned the recent cases of sexual assaults and said there should be no politics over rape. Addressing the Indian diaspora at an event ‘Bharat Ki Baat, Sabke Saath’ in London, he said that ‘a rape is a rape’.
“How can we tolerate this exploitation of our daughters? But can we compare the number of rapes in different governments? We cannot say there were this many rapes in our government and that many in yours. There cannot be a worse way to deal with this issue,” he was quoted as saying in an IANS report. He also stressed upon the need for the people to teach their sons to treat girls with respect.
