Lucknow, Dec 1: The result of Municipal Corporation elections or Nagar Nigam Chunav of Uttar Pradesh will be declared today. Altogether 16 municipal corporations or Nagar Nigams went to polls in three phases of urban local body elections 2017 (Nagar Nikay Chunav) in Uttar Pradesh. In 2012 civic polls, there were only 12 municipal corporations and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh winning 10 of 12 mayoral posts in Nagar Nigams. Four new municipal corporations – Ayodhya Nagar Nigam, Mathura-Vrindavan Nagar Nigam, Saharanpur Nagar Nigam and Firozabad Nagar Nigam – have been formed post the 2012 Nagar Nikay Chunav. In 2012, BJP candidates won mayoral elections in Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, Agra, Gorakhpur, Moradabad, Aligarh, Jhansi and Varanasi municipal corporations. The Samajwadi Party-backed candidate I S Tomar bagged the mayoral post of Bareilly Nagar Nigam. The Mayoral seat of Allahabad municipal corporation went to Bahujan Samaj Party’s fold. The Congress had failed to impress voters. This year, the contest will be six-corned following the arrival of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The Uttar Pradesh municipal corporation election results will decide whether Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath kept BJP’s popularity intact after coming to power in March. Unlike 2017 Assembly polls, Congress and SP contested UP local body elections without forging an alliance.
