New Delhi, July 31: At a time when Supreme Court is hearing a number of cases over entry of women in a few temples across the country, another such example has come to light where villagers have purified a temple following a woman MLA’s visit. The incident from Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh has triggered a fresh controversy after the temple was cleaned with ‘Gangajal and the statues of deities were sent to Allahabad for purification after the visit of ruling party MLA Manisha Anuragi.
Anuragi, BJP legislator from Raath visited the temple on July 12 while she was in her assembly constituency to to distribute stationary in a school. In the village there is a temple of Dhoomra Rishi, a saint of the mythical Mahabharat era. Locals believe that the saint doesn’t like the presence of women inside the temple.
“Till today no women had entered the temple. When Manisha Anuragi entered the temple I was not there otherwise I would not have allowed her to enter,”Priest of the temple in Hamirpur said, while speaking to ANI.
Reacting over the issue, the BJP MLA said,”It’s an insult to women if such things have happened. These are deeds of half-witted people.”
A week ago, the Supreme Court while hearing the matter of banning entry of women in Sabarimala, the SC had rebuked the authorities and had said,”On what basis you (temple authorities) deny the entry. It is against the Constitutional mandate. Once you open it for the public, anybody can go.”
