Uttarakhand: 9 dead due to monsoons; IMD predicts heavy rain in next 24 hours

Dehradun, July 17: At least nine people have died and scores displaced from their homes as monsoon continues to lash large parts of the state, causing water logging in several areas as well as leading to major road and highway blockages. Three people died because of a landslide, while the six were killed after their car into a gorge. The Himalayan state has been seeing landslides and floods on a large scale this year as well. as monsoon continued to disrupt normal life here.

Pilgrimage to Badrinath was also disrupted due to the highway leading to the shrine being blocked by boulders. Monsoons have also caused many rivers in the state to rise above the danger mark. Sharda, Tauns, Ramganga, Nandhaur, Gaula, Kosi, Saryu, as well as the Ganga in Haridwar have all been flowing above the mark. Especially heavy rains have been predicted in the disaster-prone Pithoragarh, Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts. Traffic to and from the state has been crippled with most major highways being rendered useless due to landslides. Haridwar-Delhi Highway has also been blocked, as has Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra road blocked near Mangti border. Rail routes have also been affected due to collection of debris on railway tracks. Water logging has been reported from several parts of Roorke, with water entering people’s houses.
