Dehradun, July 1: The death toll due to torrential rains and cloud burst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts rose to 30 on Friday. Torrential rains continued to wreak havoc in the state, with scores missing in after floods washed away dozens of houses in the ghat area of Chamoli. Responding to the situation, the National disaster Response Force (NDRF) has sprung into action. NDRF teams rushed to the areas affected by could burst, while additional teams have also been put on alert in the state.
At least 25 people have been reported missing, after floods washed away houses, destroyed vast agricultual lands and washed away bridges. Landslides have also been reported from at least two areas- near Devprayag leading to the blocking of National Highway (NH-58) and from Gangolgaon, leading to blockage of the Kedarnath Highway. Entry of heavy vehicles has been halted on the Kedarnath Highway, even as Thal-Munsyari road was also cut-off with dozens of vehicles been stranded on both sides of the road. Yamunotri highway near Kharadi, has also been reportedly damaged, crippling traffic in the area. Due to the cloud burst, river Alaknanda is threatening to overflow and flood the low lying areas of the surroundings in Chamoli, after the water levels crossed the danger mark on Friday. This comes after the Indian Meteorlogical Department predicted heavy rains in the next 72 hours on Wednesday. Alerts had been sounded by the IMD in several isolated places.
