Uttarakhand: At least eight persons were killed and 11 others injured after a pickup van fell into a deep gorge near Pithoragarh road in Champawat on Sunday. Meanwhile, the rescue operations conducted to save the victims came to an end.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Champawat Dhirendra Gunjyal, the vehicle was en route to a ghat cremation ground when the unfortunate accident took place. The injured persons were immediately taken to the nearby hospitals, said Gunjyal who supervised the rescue operation. Meanwhile, efforts were on to retrieve the six bodies, added the officer.
In a similar incident on September 13, 2018, a passenger vehicle fell into a 200-metre-deep gorge killing 13 people and leaving two others seriously injured. The vehicle fell after being hit by a landslide on Gangotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district.
On May 6, 2017, at least four pilgrims from Maharashtra were killed on the spot and seven others were injured when their vehicle fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district. The van met with the accident at Changora on Lambgaon-Kotalgaon-Chamiyala road in the district around 12.30 PM killing, said Tehri SSP N S Napalchyal.
