Dehradun, August 5: Heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand’s Kotdwar claimed nine lives due to cloudburst on Friday, informed the officials. The state has been receiving heavy showers from last few days, leading to floods and landslides in few regions. The people who lost their lives due to cloudburst are identified as Lakshya Arora, Jyoti Arora, Shanti Devi and Ajit Kumar. One body is yet to be identified. The Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted heavy rains for Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand for the next 48 hours.
Due to continuous and heavy downpour, there is flooding in Kotdwar in Pauri Garhwal district, reports ANI. The floods in the region have affected the normal life of the people and disrupted the traffic. The Skymet Weather predicts vigorous rainfall in Uttarakhand. Due to heavy rains, water from an overflowing rain-fed Paniala Gadar entered many houses. The floods also washed away some people in the area.
According to TOI, two bikers drowned in the Mahakali river in Pithoragarh when debris hit their bike. In another incident, a school student slipped into the Tehri lake and lost his life. In Bagheswar region, a rivulet swept away a child.
The continuous showers led to a landslide on the Gangotri highway near Laldhang and Chadethi, reports ANI. The road is still blocked due to the landslide. More rains are predicted in the area. The Regional Met Office warned of very heavy rains on Saturday, in places such as Dehradun and Rishikesh.
