Haldwani, August 25: Uttrakhand Police on Friday registered a complaint of shopkeepers alleging they were delivered shoes in Tricolour boxes. The shopkeepers alleged the consignment was sent from a distributor in Delhi and they did not know the origin of the consignment.

Meanwhile, the situation remained tense in the town after the news about shoe boxes spread. Shopkeepers after finding the boxes complained to Police. A shopkeeper said, “I received the goods on Thursday and when I opened the bags, I was shocked. I called the police, sensing something wrong.” The police officers said the move was intended to humiliate the feelings of residents after the standoff between India and China continued in Doklam.

Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police Sadanand Date said the police questioned Tamanna Traders in Rudrapur and trying to trace its origin. Date said,“We would be questioning the dealer in New Delhi to ascertain the origin of these shoes.”

Senior Superintendent of Police of Almora P Renuka Devi said the police was investigating the matter. The incident also triggered a race among political parties to gain mileage over the issue.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district president of Almora Lalit Latwal emphasised the police and administration came into action after his complaint. Latwal was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying, “As soon I received information about the consignment I immediately requested the administration to forfeit the boxes and act against those who are involved in insulting Indian flag. It looks like a bigger conspiracy. The party workers will keep an eye on the case until those culprits are not arrested.”
