Varanasi, December 20: Clashes broke out between police and protesters after Banaras Hindu University student leader Ashutosh Singh was arrested on charges of obstructing an IIT-BHU programme in Varanasi. The protesters set a school bus, belonging to Delhi Public School on fire during the clashes with police.

According to reports, the protesters pelted stones on the bus even as school students were sitting inside it. The bus was later set on fire after the students managed to run away.

University officials said the students and supporters of Ashutosh, which included outsiders, shut the main gates of the university’s campus before going on a rampage, NDTV reported. Nearly a dozen other vehicles were damaged in the protest.

Police claimed that it had received multiple complaints against Ashutosh over the last few days.

University officials did not allow the police inside the campus to prevent the situation from escalating. They had dealt with the protests with their own manpower, largely private security guards.
