New Delhi, July 18: Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, who was Monday named as NDA candidate for the post of Vice President, has resigned from the post of Urban Development Minister. M Venkaiah Naidu is the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information and Broadcasting in the Modi administration. Smriti Irani, who holds the Textile Ministry, has been given additional charge of Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The Urban Development Minister portfolio has been given to Narendra Singh Tomar.

A prominent leader of the BJP,  Venkaiah Naidu has also served as its national president from 2002 to 2004. BJP President Amit Shah announced his candidature for the August 5 Vice Presidential election after a 90-minute meeting of the BJP’s Central Parliamentary Board chaired by Shah and attended by top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Both as a student leader and political figure, Naidu gained prominence as a brilliant orator, who vigorously championed the cause of the farmers and the development of backward areas. His oratory skills and political activism propelled his political career and he was elected as an MLA to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly twice from Udayagiri constituency in Nellore district in 1978 and 1983. He rose to become one of the most popular leaders of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh.
