New Delhi, Aug 11: M Venkaiah Naidu will take oath as the 13th Vice President of India today at 10 AM. The oath taking ceremony of Venkaiah Naidu will take place in Darbar Hall at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Before he is sworn in as Vice President, Naidu will pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. Naidu, who was nominated by Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance, defeated opposition’s candidate Goplakrishna Gandhi in the vice presidential election. Prior to the formal function, Venkaiah Naidu will pay tributes to Jan Sangh leader Deendayal Upadhyaya, Sardar Vallabhai Patel and Dr BR Ambedkar. Naidu was elected the next Vice President of India on August 5, defeating opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi by a margin of 272 votes. With 516 votes, Naidu received 67.9 per cent vote share. It was the highest vote share in 30 years.
Before officially taking over the Vice President’s post, Venkaiah Naidu said as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha he would sincerely try to steer the functioning of the House without “fear or favour” and uphold its dignity and decorum with the cooperation of all members. Naidu, who will succeed Hamid Ansari, said he was “humbled by the honour bestowed on me by electing me to the office of the Vice President of India” by virtue of which he also becomes the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
