New Delhi, Sept 9: Senior advocate and former union minister Ram Jethmalani announced his retirement from legal practice on Saturday. While addressing the members of Bar Council of India, the apex bar body, Jethmalani said he would be officially stepping down from his profession on September 14.
Jethmalani’s legal career stretches back to 1940, when he obtained the law degree at the age of 17. He began practicing in his hometown of Shikarpur, Sindh, (which falls under present-day Pakistan). Following partition, he made for himself in the legal circles of Bombay, now Mumbai.
Although Jethmalani would be stepping away from the legal practice, he would continue to remain active in public life. “Till I’m alive, I would remain active politically and raise my voice for the common people,” he said.
“I am here just to tell you I am retiring from the profession but I am taking on a new role as long as I am alive. I wish to combat the corrupt politicians that have been brought into the position of power and I hope the condition of India will take good shape,” Jethmalani was quoted as saying by PTI.
Taking a jibe at the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the 94-year-old said it has equally disappointed the government as the erstwhile UPA regime.
At the Bar Council of India meet, which was called to felicitate recently appointed Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra, Jethmalani said it is the duty of the judiciary to assure those in power do not cross the line.
“It is the duty of the members of the bar and all good citizens to rise to this great calamity,” he said, adding that governance under the tenure of Modi regime is a disaster, with the most vulnerable sections of the society being oppressed.
