New Delhi, August 5: After NDA’s candidate Venkatesh Naidu emerged as the next Vice President of the nation, he was congratulated by many on Saturday including the Opposition candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi. “I congratulate Venkaiah Naidu on his victory, and wish him all the best for his new office,” said Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Out of 760 valid votes, Venkaiah bagged 516 votes, while Gandhi was restricted to 244.

Speaking to media persons after the election result, Gandhi thanked acknowledged the Opposition for their support. “Thank those who voted for me. I was expecting a handsome performance by united vote of opposition parties and I’m more than satisfied,” stated Gandhi, the former Governor of West Bengal. Also Read – Venkaiah Naidu Elected 13th Vice President, Wins Poll With Decisive Margin

He further added, “Today is the victory of the ballot. It is the victory of democracy. This was not a battle against any individual. As far as the ideological battle goes, I will continue to be part of it.”

Congress, the prime Opposition, said Gandhi’s defeat does not deter them to oppose the ideology of the ruling dispensation. “Today, we have lost because the numbers were in favour of BJP. But is not an ideological defeat. The opposition has proved that it would not compromise on ideology whether we win or lose,” said Ghulam Nabi Azad. 

In the election that was held today, 14 MPs were absent from voting which included 2 from BJP, 2 from INC, 2 from IUML, 4 from TMC, 1 from NCP; 1 from PMK and 2 Independent, reported ANI.

Voting ended today at 5 pm and in total 771 out of 785 votes were polled, recording 98.21% poll percentage.
