New Delhi, April 27: Actor-turned-politician Vinod Khanna died on Thursday morning battling a prolonged illness in Mumbai. Khanna breathed his last at the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Girgaon in Mumbai. The hospital authorities said that Khanna was suffering from bladder cancer.
Khanna was a heartthrob in his times. His movies Amar Akbar Anthony, Qurbani, Mukaddar Ka Sikander were among the best in his career. However, when Khanna was at the peak of his career when he quit movies and took the spiritual path, leaving the Bollywood industry shocked. In 1982, after losing his mother, Khanna went to his spiritual guru Osho Rajneesh. Khanna, who was taken aback after his mother’s death, went into a five-year hiatus. He moved to Rajneeshpuram in the United States in 1982 and stayed there for five years. It is said that Khanna cleaned dishes and worked as Osho’s gardener at Rajneeshpuram while his family was back in India. Many say that this five year hiatus made him distant from his family and resulted in a divorce between him and his then wife Geetanjali. He returned to films after a five-year spiritual break and gave two back to back hit films Insaaf and Satyamev Jayate.
Earlier this year, there were also reports that the Khanna family was planning a film on the life of Osho, and that the film was to be co-produced by Vinod Khanna.
