‘We Want Kashmir But Not Kashmiris’: Chidambaram Speaks on Growing Attacks on Kashmiris Nationwide

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has taken a sharp dig at the BJP-led government over its refusal to believe reports of Kashmiri students being attacked by violent mobs nationwide.

New Delhi: In wake of the Pulwama terror strike and the subsequent violent attacks on Kashmiris nationwide, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Thursday tweeted a heartfelt message, “The irony of the situation is depressing. We want Kashmir to be part of India, but we do not want Kashmiris to be part of Indians.”

A week after the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) engineered attack in south Kashmir’s Pulwama claimed lives of 40 CRPF personnel and jolted India to review its policy on Kashmir and the frontier security- the Congress leader voiced his dismay on the growing intolerance in India.

In his two-part tweet, former finance minister attacked the Governor of Meghalaya over his comments that “he is inclined to agree” with a retired Indian Army colonel to boycott everything Kashmiri, even Amarnath visits for next two years.

Chidambaram then used the reference of Statue of Unity, installed by the Bhartiya Janata Party near Sarovar Dam in Gujarat to honour Sardar Vallabhai Patel- amidst much chest-beating over how they want to celebrate his legacy. Ironically, Vallabhai Patel is a known political icon who fought for social equality, unity and peace.

Further attacking Union Minister for Human Resources and Development Prakash Javadekar’s remarks refuting reports of Kashmiri students being attacked in various parts of the country, Chidambaram tweeted,


The Congress leader has taken a sharp dig at the BJP-led government for the present volatile situation in the country and the Valley following the dastardly Pulwama attack.
