Kolkata, Jan 17: 1 person injured during police firing in South 24 Parganas Power Grid set up issue succumbed to his injury on Tuesday evening. As per reports, several others were wounded as police fired on the agitators as villagers clashed with the police in South 24 Parganas district’s Bhangar-II block against a proposed power grid project in the area.
The issue began last week over ‘forced’ acquisition of 16 acras of farmland by the State Government for the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (PGCIL). As per a report by Business Standard, as the police tried entering the Padmakur village, angry villagers arrived the area and indulged in an open clash with the police. Reportedly, in the face of resistance, the police had to fire at the agitators.
After being shot by the police, the injured person was taken to the hospital by the villagers where he succumbed to his injury. Reportedly he was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The proposed power grid and the ‘acquired’ land spreads over the villages of Khamarait, Machhi Bhanga, Tona and Padmapukur.
On Tuesday afternoon a huge police force reportedly accompanied by a battalion of the Rapid Action Force tried entering the village area but the villagers pelted stones on the police vehicles injuring several police personnel. According to the police, the villagers also torched a police van and two police vans were pushed into a pond.
Following the incident, chief minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted that there will be no acquisition without people’s consent. She further added that if required the proposed power grid project will be relocated.
