New Delhi: Two people were killed and at least seven injured on Sunday evening after an under-construction bridge collapsed in Farakka, Baishnabnagar area of Malda district, West Bengal. The incident took place at around 8 PM when a girder of the second Farakka bridge started bending and eventually collapsed. Rescue teams rushed to spot and at least seven workers were taken out from the debris, two of whom succumbed to their injuries. The deceased have been identified as labourers working on the bridge project.
Teams of Disaster Management Group and Police are also present at the spot. The cause of the collapse is still being ascertained and further details are awaited. The collapse has disrupted traffic in the surrounding area.
