West Bengal Assembly Election 2016: One CPI(M) worker and a polling agent murdered by TMC workers

Burdwan, April 22: One Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI (M) and a polling agent has been allegedly murdered by All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Khandaghosh area of Burdwan in West Bengal. On Thursday, amid violence a person was found dead and several others were injured while 62 constituencies voted in West Bengal in the third phase of the Assembly Elections 2016. Tahidul Islam, a CPI (M) activist, was killed when crude bombs were hurled at him in Domkal in Murshidabad district. The Election Commission officials said that they have received over 1,500 complaint of violent including voter intimidation and disruption of the polls. Security officials held 47 people at the scene.

On Thursday, constituencies including 22 in Murshidabad, 17 in Nadia, 16 in Burdwan districts and seven in north Kolkata voted. Violence was reported in Murshidabad, Nadia and Burdwan districts. CPI (M) leader Anisur Rahaman blamed the TMC for the killing while the ruling part denied it. Trinamool’s Domkal nominee Soumik Hossain claimed the death was a result of a clash between the CPI-M and the Congress supporters. Police also seized several crude bombs near a booth at Saguna in Nadia district. Atleast four voters were injured in Mangalkote of Burdwan who accused CPI (M) for the attack. Police also arrested fake voters in Gayeshpur town of Nadia district.

Voters in 105 of the state’s total 294 assembly constituencies have voted on April 4, 11 and 17 in the first two phases.  Polling in the fourth, fifth and sixth phases will be held on April 25, 30 and May 5 for 49, 53 and 25  in their respective constituencies. (With inputs from IANS)
