Kolkata, March 13: Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra, who was arrested for supporting JNU students and for circulating a cartoon of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on social media, today announced that he will contest in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections of 2016. Mahapatra has decided to contest elections as an ‘independent’ candidate.
Mahapatra, who runs an NGo ‘Aakranta Aamra’ (We are the assaulted) for last couple of years will be contesting from Behla constituency and had decided to challenge the Sovan Chatterjee, Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
The organisation also announced a female candidate Pratima Dutta who will file her nomination from Domjur in Howrah. Pratima is widow of slain activist Tapan Dutta, who was allegedly killed by TMC workers. The Jadavpur University professor also asked for the support from various political parties in West Bengal. With few days left for West Bengal Assembly polls the heat had gathered against Trinamool Congress. Ashok Ganguly Former Supreme Court judge said it was time that people must get together to defeat the “tyrinically rule” of the ruling TMC.
In 2012, Mahapatra was arrested for circulating a cartoon of Mamata Banerjee and her associate Mukul Roy, soon after Dinesh Trivedi was asked to resign as Railway Minister in 2012. Kolkata Mayor reportedly said, that the people have allied them and he was confident about his parties victory in West Bengal Assembly elections.
