West Bengal Bandh: BJP, TMC Workers Clash During Statewide Protest, Sporadic Violence Reported From Several Districts

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a 12-hour bandh in West Bengal on Wednesday in protest of the death of two students in Islampur during a demonstration regarding the appointment of school teachers in North Dinajpur’s Islampur district.

Several buses were vandalised in various parts of the state. One government bus was vandalised in Howrah Maidan and another private bus vandalised in Howrah’s Tikiapara. In other districts, train services were brought to a standstill as blocked the rail routes.

Train services were affected on Sealdah-Barasat Bangaon section of Eastern Railway’s Sealdah Division as obstructions were made at Ashoknagar Road, Madhyamgram, Guma, Thakurnagar. On the Sealdah-Diamond Harbour Section obstructions were made between Mallikpur-Subhasgram.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out between TMC and BJP supporters in West Midnapore, West Burdwan, South Dinajpur and North Dinajpur districts when rallies were taken out by the BJP in support of the bandh. Also, BJP MP Roopa Ganguly was seen distributing leaflets in Kolkata.

For the unversed, the West Bengal Bandh has been called in the aftermath of the clash which took place between police and students. The skirmish ensued after they stopped two newly-recruited teachers from entering Daribhit High School in Islampur. This isn’t something new. The students have been protesting over the recruitment of both Urdu and Sanskrit teachers as they wanted vacancies in English and Science subjects to be filled first.

The clash resulted in the death of two students, Rajesh Sarkar and Tapas Barman. While the BJP alleged that the two students were killed in police firing, the police denied the claim saying they did not fire during the clash. North Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Sumit Kumar said that police did not fire during the incident.
