Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are at loggerheads as the saffron party has called for a 12-hour bandh in West Bengal to protest the death of two students during a clash over the appointment of school teachers in North Dinajpur’s Islampur area.
While the TMC has said that it will check any untoward situation in the state, the BJP has been alleging that the state government has been trying to forcefully thwart the bandh. As per an ANI report, buses have been torched and vandalised this morning. Train movement has been obstructed by protesters on Howrah-Bardhaman Main Line.
Meanwhile, drivers of government buses in Cooch Behar had to wear helmets while driving after some of the buses were vandalised by protesters today. Control rooms have been set up and as many as 4,000 police personnel are patrolling on the streets. The TMC government on Tuesday had said that it will provide protection to everyone who will be out to foil the bandh and will also compensate for the vehicles if any were to be damaged.
Earlier, State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee had accused BJP of stalling development in the state by calling the bandh. Chatterjee had said, “The police will take strong action if anyone tries to enforce the strike. Our party workers have also been instructed to remain alert and monitor the situation but they must not respond to provocations. All DMs and SPs have been asked to take action if the situation goes out of hand.”
