Kolkata, Feb 1: The counting of votes for West Bengal Bye-Elections 2018 began at 8 AM today. The results for Uluberia Lok Sabha Bye-Election 2018 and Noapara Assembly Bye-Election 2018 will be declared in a few hours. Over 76 per cent voter turnout was recorded in West Bengal’s Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency and 75.3 per cent in the Noapara Assembly bypolls. The main contest is between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Uluberia Lok Sabha Bye-Election 2018 was necessitated after the death of Sultan Ahmed, the sitting TMC MP. The TMC has fielded Sultan Ahmed’s widow, Sajda from the seat. The CPI(M)-led Left Front nominated Sabiruddin Molla, the Congress fielded SK Madassar Hossain Warsi and BJP’s district committee leader Anupam Mallik along with five independent candidates are in the fray for the Lok Sabha seat.
On the other hand, Noapara Assembly Bye-Election 2018 was necessitated following the demise of Congress MLA Madhusudan Ghose. For the bypolls, the Congress has nominated Goutam Bose in a bid to retain the seat whereas, the TMC has fielded Sunil Singh. Gargi Chatterjee of the CPI(M) and Sandip Banerjee of the BJP are also in the fray.
In 2016, TMC bagged 211 out of the 295 seats in West Bengal Assembly elections. The Congress won 44, the Left front 32 and the BJP 6 seats.
In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, TMC won 34 seats out of the 44 parliamentary seats in West Bengal. The Congress bagged four and Left Front and BJP two seats each.
