In September this year, a slum-dweller of Shyambazar was arrested for plotting and executing the murder of her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Police had said that the culprit, Mani, had an illicit affair with a 16-year-old boy who allegedly strangulated the child on August 29 before dumping her into a manhole. The child’s body was recovered on September 1.

The mother had initially raised an alarm over her ‘missing child’ and had complained that a drug addict had tried to murder her. The police had apprehended her ‘minor lover’. During questioning, the youth had informed the two wanted to live together and felt the child was the biggest obstacle in their path. The woman’s husband is reportedly a drunkard and never helped her raise the girl.
