Kolkata, May 17: The counting of votes for West Bengal Panchayat election 2018 results is underway. 622 Zilla Parishads, 6,158 Panchayat Samitis and 31,836 Gram Panchayats across 20 districts of West Bengal went to polls on May 14 for the Panchayati Raj Institutions. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has bagged 34 per cent of seats unopposed. Amid widespread violence, polling in 622 Zilla Parishads, 6,158 Panchayat Samitis and 31,836 Gram Panchayats was held on Monday, which saw a voter turnout of 73 per cent. Since voting was widely marred by violence, re-polling took place at 568 panchayat polling booths across 19 districts in West Bengal on Wednesday, which saw a 68 per cent turnout. Over a dozen of people were killed in violence during elections for Zilla Parishads, Panchayat Samitis and Gram Panchayats in West Bengal. Voting for the rural bodies in West Bengal was to be held on May 1, 3 and 5, but as the nomination process started in April, it was rescheduled to May 14 by the SEC following a Calcutta High Court order to extend the nomination deadline and announce a fresh polling date. Catch live updates on West Bengal Panchayat election results here.
