New Delhi: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy welcomed the Modi Cabinet ‘s decision to approve the inclusion of caste-based data in the upcoming national census. Reddy said that Telangana is the first state to conduct a caste survey. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the inclusion of caste-based data in the upcoming national census, a long-standing demand rooted in the call for evidence-based policymaking and inclusive growth.

Taking to social media, CM Reddy wrote:

“What Telangana does today, India does tomorrow. I thank Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji and the Union Cabinet for accepting the long-standing demand for a caste census. This is a victory for data-driven governance and social justice.” In 2024, Telangana etched its name in history by conducting an extensive Social, Economic, and Caste Survey—India’s first since 1931. The survey revealed that 56.32% of the state’s population belonged to Backward Castes, prompting the government to propose 42% reservations for OBCs across education, employment, and political representation. The initiative was hailed as a pioneering step in redressing systemic inequalities.

The Centre’s recent approval has drawn support from across the political spectrum. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi lauded the Telangana government’s leadership, stating: “I congratulate and thank Telangana CM @revanth_anumula garu for implementing the historic Caste Census… the first-ever initiative of its kind in Independent India.”
