Acharya Satyendra Das, the chief priest of Ayodhya’s Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, passed away on Wednesday at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow, as confirmed by the hospital. The 83-year-old priest had been admitted on February 3 after suffering a brain stroke. He was also dealing with serious health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure.
According to the hospital, “Satyendra Das ji, the chief priest of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, passed away today. He was admitted to the Neurology ward’s High Dependency Unit (HDU) on February 3 in critical condition after suffering a stroke.”
According to Pradeep Das, the elderly priest’s cremation will take place by the banks of the Saryu river in Ayodhya on Thursday and his body was currently being taken to the holy city from Lucknow.
In his condolence message, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the elderly priest’s death was “an irreparable loss”.
Acharya Satyendra Das, a 83-year-old Hindu saint, was the head priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.
He had been at the temple since the time of the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. He was a member of Nirvani Akhara and had dedicated his life to spiritual work since a young age of 20. He was a pleasant and friendly man and was often sought out by reporters for quotes on Ayodhya and the Ram temple saga.
Acharya Satyendra Das also commented on religious issues other than Ayodhya. He was firmly opposed to a petition asking for ISKCON to be banned in Bangladesh and was an advocate of the organization.
Recently, he had celebrated the first anniversary of the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol at the Ayodhya temple on January 11, a first for the temple.
