Agni-5 ballistic missile: In a significant development relating to India’s strategic defence, India successfully tested its Agni-5 ballistic missile from Odisha, a nuclear-capable system with a range of 5,000 km. While India maintains the missile program is aimed at deterring China and Pakistan, Turkish media highlighted that its range also covers Turkey, sparking concern in Ankara. The Agni-5 significantly boosts India’s strike capability, extending reach across almost all of Asia and parts of Europe. It is the latest in the Agni missile series, which already includes versions with ranges between 700 km and 3,500 km. In response to the test launch of the Agni-5 ballistic missile, the Turkish media has shown immense nervousness as the missile can easily hit any part of Turkey in minutes.
India tested the nuclear-capable Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Odisha’s Chandipur, the Ministry of Defence said.
In a statement, the ministry said: “The intermediate-range ballistic missile Agni-5 was successfully test-fired from Chandipur on August 20. The launch validated all operational and technical parameters and was conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command.”
Equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, the Agni-5 missile is a cornerstone of India’s nuclear deterrent. The MIRV technology of the Agni-5 missile allows it to carry and deploy multiple nuclear warheads across different targets, that too in a single launch.
