New Delhi, July 26: Following the resignation of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday over the corruption charges faced by Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and the difference that arose between his party Janata Dal-United (JDU) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav questioned why, despite being booked under charges of murder, did Nitish Kumar become the Chief Minister in the first place.
According to Lalu, Nitish is acting on behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) due to the criminal charges leveled against him. He said, “Nitish is an accused under Section 302 of the IPC(Indian Penal Code). If convicted, he would have to serve life term behind the bars. Fearing his conviction, Nitish may be acting in this manner, to benefit the BJP and RSS,” the RJD supremo.
While factions in the JD(U) and the BJP have been saying that it is unfair to blame the BJP for Nitish’s resignation, Lalu and his party members have been emphasising on how it is a pre-planned move by BJP to destabilise governance in Bihar. Tejashwi Yadav holds the same opinion and has blamed the BJP of trying to rule Bihar by hook or by crook.

Although the resigned CM is yet to comment on the allegations made by Lalu, his resignation does put governance in Bihar at a tight spot. Lalu had earlier refuted claims that stated how he was trying to dethrone the Bihar CM and said that everyone should respect Nitish.
Just after the report of Nitish Kumar’s resignation arrived, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him for taking such a bold decision and said that Indians will welcome this move to fight corruption. The BJP has always been claiming that it is ready to provide support to JD(U) if the grand alliance ever splits. And with today’s announcement, the fate of the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) that ruled Bihar ends, as RJD and JD(U) has clearly looked at opposite directions.
The resignation came after a long haul of any official decision against the allegations and charges of corruption levied on Tejashwi Yadav, Bihar Deputy CM and son of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. Following the charges, several members of the Janata Dal have been emphasising that since Nitish Kumar has a policy of ‘zero-tolerance towards corruption’ and believes in maintaining clean governance, it is possible that Yadav might have to resign.
However, after a meeting of the RJD legislature party, Lalu ruled out that option. He further said that anyway, Nitish has not demanded Tejashwi’s resignation. But now that the parties stand divided, Lalu’s allegations against Nitish are serious in nature. In this regard, RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari also made some references to skeletons in Nitish’s closet, possible referring to his past charges.
