Lucknow, Mar 18: Mahant Yogi Adityanath, the newly elected chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has vowed to work upon the guidelines laid down by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Yogi reiterated that vikaas, or development, would be the top priority of his government. He further added that the new government led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would address the menace left behind by Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
“This is a victory for every ordinary man of UP. This victory belongs to the workers and volunteers of BJP. We would adhere to every decision of the party,” Adityanath said, while speaking to India Today. On being asked whether his Hindutva appeal forced BJP to announce him as CM designate, he replied, “BJP is a democratic party. All decisions are taken in consultation with our leaders. I express gratitude to the party for recognizing my hard work and giving me the opportunity.”
Adityanath further added that he would not consider himself as above the party. “I am a soldier of BJP. I have been elected 5 times as MP, but party has played a major role in my victories. We would adhere to the party and follow the footsteps of respected Narendra Modi ji,” he added.
“Our first task would be to address the menace left behind by successive regimes of SP and BSP. Our target would be to link UP with the pace of development at Centre,” Adityanath said.
Adityanath, 44, the firebrand MP from Gorakhpur, was chosen for the top job by BJP. His elevation was cleared in the evening after BJP MLAs chose him as the legislature party leader. Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma, the two other CM probables, have been announced as deputy chief ministers.
Opposition has sharply reacted to the appointment of Adityanath as the chief minister. Senior JD(U) leader KC Tyagi said, “His appointment would further polarise the political condition in Uttar Pradesh.” AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi took a jibe against PM Modi saying, “Prime Minister is creating his ‘New India’ in Uttar Pradesh.”
