New Delhi: On Wednesday, the CPI(M) and the Congress gave adjournment motion notices in Lok Sabha over Rafale and demonetisation respectively, said ANI. During the Winter Session, Parliament hasn’t been able to function at all with Opposition giving adjournment motion notices over Rafale.

On Tuesday in Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the privilege motion against the Government on Rafale deal should be accepted. The Government, he said, has misled Parliament and the Supreme Court on the issue by giving a wrong affidavit on the Rafale deal.

His remarks triggered protests from the treasury benches. In the Lok Sabha, senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the party was ready for a discussion on the Rafale issue but demanded that a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) be formed to investigate the deal.

BJP members raised slogans demanding an apology from Congress President Rahul Gandhi. Within minutes, the House was adjourned till noon because of the protests. As the House re-convened at noon for the second time, members of the AIADMK, the TDP and the Congress started protesting again.

The Congress, demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), continued sloganeering on the Rafale issue. The BJP members demanded an apology from Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The TDP members were demanding special status for Andhra Pradesh while the AIADMK MPs were protesting against a dam on the Cauvery river. Eventually, both the Houses were adjourned till 11 AM, Thursday.

Amid the ongoing commotion, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said on Tuesday that she often got messages that schools ran better than Parliament. She went on to wonder if these disruptions show that MPs behave worse than school children.

She added that this was an important session as elections were around the corner. The Lok Sabha has been witnessing daily disruptions since the winter session began last week. It had passed a bill on transgender rights on Monday and the triple talaq bill was presented on Tuesday. The National Institute of Design (Amendment) Bill, 2018 was also introduced in the House.
