Lucknow, March 19: With Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed its government in Uttar Pradesh and with Yogi Adityanath taking charge as the state head, the countdown for the closure of mechanised abattoirs has begun in the Hindi heartland. The swearing-in of new Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in Lucknow on Sunday afternoon is likely to pave way for promulgation of an ordinance in this regards and most likely it will come into effect from Sunday midnight.
In BJP’s manifesto, a ban on mechanised abattoirs or slaughterhouses was one of the main promises made by the party in Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017 and after the party has marked landslide victory the ordinance is likely to come into effect tonight, The New Indian Express.
According to a report published by The New Indian Express, the BJP’s manifesto promised promulgation of an ordinance by midnight on the very next day the party comes into power in Uttar Pradesh. Even BJP chief Amit Shah has raised this issue consistently and was vocal about in his election rallies across the state, especially in western UP where these slaughterhouses are located in large numbers. According to animal husbandry department, in 2014-15 the state produced around 7,51.14 lakh kg buffalo meat. Overall in 2015-16, India exported 13,14,158.05 tonnes of buffalo meat products which have a market value of Rs 26,681.56 crore, as per the figure quoted by The New Indian Express.
In Amroha, Chandpur and Bijnor there are a large number of illegal abattoirs. The BJP manifesto talks about illegal slaughterhouses in its manifesto but those involved in the legal meat industry are also living in fear of the forthcoming ordinance. Those who are part of legal meat business fear that they might be targeted on the basis of mere suspicion.
Some reports suggest that the BJP government to implement its promise from Sunday midnight and the rest running legally will continue for now. But once the licenses of the mechanised abattoirs expire, there will be no further renewal, a source was quoted by TNIEXP.
A large number of Qureshi’s, a Muslim sub-community, are involved in this business and they fear after the ordinance is implemented they would be brought under the scanner.
