Thane: A woman Shiv Sena leader was allegedly duped of over Rs 9 lakh by four people in Thane district of Maharashtra, police said. (Also read: Seven Arrested For Duping Jewellers of Diamonds Worth Rs 7 Crore)

Jyoti Thakare is the chairperson of state government-run Mahila Arthik Vikas Mahamandal which works for women entrepreneurs. In her complaint, Thakare said she owned a petrol pump and another business and needed a loan of about Rs 7 crore loan to run it properly.

Last year, she alleged, two of the accused year offered to arrange the loan through a private financial firm and sought Rs 60,000 as their charges. Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said that the men did not see her loan application through even after taking the said amount from Thakare.

Then, two other men offered to help Thakare and allegedly took Rs 8.5 lakh from her but they also failed to arrange the loan. When they kept evading her, Thakare lodged a complaint against the four men at the Naupada police station here.

Based on the complaint, the police registered offences against Amit Koli, Prashant Kadam, Balchandra Palva and Omkar Hatle alias Amit Patil. The four men were all Thane natives, under Indian Penal Code Sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust), Narkar said.

No arrest was made so far, she said, adding that a probe was into the matter.

A couple of months ago,  an Uttar Pradesh jeweller had reported a theft worth Rs 140 crore worth of gold and jewels with Kanpur police.

The shop where the alleged theft was reported was an equal partner shop that was closed on May 30, 2013, after a dispute, an official said. A court in Kanpur had sometime back ordered the shop to be opened by the police in presence of both partners.

The alleged theft took place just before it could be reopened.
