New Delhi, June 21: Today is World Yoga Day. It is being celebrated across the world. This day was approved by the United Nations at India’s initiative. Yoga was invented in ancient India and was discovered by the West in the 20th century as various Yoga ambassadors made it popular in other parts of the world apart from the Indian continent. These Yogis gave so much international popularity to Yoga that it has become a phenomenon, a movement. Here is the list of the most iconic and popular Yoga Gurus in the recent while.


Tirumalai Krishnamacharya is known as the father of modern Yoga. He revived hatha yoga. He was the Guru of some of the most famous Yoga Gurus of the country and abroad. It is believed that he could stop his heartbeat for a moment.

Swamy Raam

Swami Rama 

Swamy Rama is set up Himalayan Institute. He had control over his bodily functions. He was the first Yogi who the scientist studied for his ability to control involuntary functions like blood pressure, heart beats etc.


BKS Iyenger

BKS Iyenger was the foremost Yoga trainer in the world. He lived most of his life in the US. He founded a style Iyenger Yoga. He was awarded Padmasree, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India.


Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi taught Transcendental Medication Technique in Europe and the US. He was the guru to many Hollywood celebrities including pop group The Beatles. He passed away in 2008.

Dheerendra Bramhachari 

The controversial guru was the Yoga teacher to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In the 60s, he was invited by the USSR to train its cosmonauts in Hath yoga. Later, Jawahar Lal Nehru invited him to teach his daughter Indira. Later, he became close to Indira Gandhi and was a major power centre during emergency.
