“Love Shots”—the new six-part series of short YouTube videos from Y-Films— is not your typical love story. The edgy youth arm of Yash Raj Films (YRF), premiered the first episode of “Love Shots” on March 8.

The films are approximately five to 10 minutes long and do not show the typical boy-meets-girl Bollywood romances. Instead, each film seems to show love from a different angle.

“We thought of changing the format,” Ashish Patil, Y-Films vice president and the series producer told IANS. “So, these are six short films, all about love. It’s meant to be like a tequila, which leaves the audience high on love.”

In the first film, “The Road Trip,” the scene opens on a bickering young couple on the side of a rural road, with their car smoldering in the background. Nikhil and Archie are playing the blame game, which quickly turns into a dispute over former flings. All the bickering stops when they see two white vans in the distance, speeding towards them.

“Here they come,” Nikhil—played by Tahir Raj Bhasin—silently said.

“Mom and Dad are going to be very upset with us, aren’t they?” Archie—played by Nimrat Kaur—silently replies.

Nikhil apologizes to Archie for driving too fast; she apologizes to him for not wearing her seatbelt and for taking a selfie as they were turning that last corner. They hold each other tight as the men emerge from the vans, stretchers in hand, and run towards the steaming car—and it becomes clear that this is a love story that has just ended.

Films in this series are released on YouTube every Tuesday, and each film features a new couple and a new story. Audiences can look forward to seeing familiar faces such as Farida Jalal, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Tillotama Shome, Rhea Chakraborty, Mohit Marwah, Saba Azad, Swanand Kirkire and more.

Saqib Saleem and Shweta Tripathi star in the second film “Koi Dekh Lega” which begins with the couple sitting and waiting for the bus. The two flirtatiously discuss the bus schedule and traffic, completely enveloped by their conversation and oblivious to those around them. Saleem comments on Tripathi’s perfume and begins to sing her a song. As he her sings, he inches his hand forward and attempts to hold hers.

“What are you doing? Someone will see!” she says, yanking her hand away. As the bus pulls up, however, we discover, that when it comes to this couple, there is more than meets the eye.

Each of the short videos is set to original music, composed by up-in-coming artists like Shaan and Superbia, Gaurav Dagaonkar, Subhi Khanna and Ankur Tewari. The second film is put to an original tune called “Faasle” by Anand Bhaskar Collective, which is described as “a beautiful song about how love melts away all the distances and differences.”

In the span of each short film, Y-Films—famed for other mini-series including “Bang Baaja Baaraat” and “Man’s World”—leaves audiences with a lot to think about and feeling of love, loss, and everything in between. The team behind these films has high hopes for the series.

“Internationally, short films have made it big, and there are dedicated film festivals for them,” Patel said. “It’s a shorter, interesting medium to show stories which may not necessarily have a big start, middle and end moments, but you will know the characters well enough even in three minutes.”
