New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yashwant Sinha on Monday took a jab at Narendra Modi over his “non-Nehru-Gandhi leader and ‘Dalit’ Sitaram Kesri was thrown out of the party to make way for Sonia Gandhi”, saying that he too is a Dalit and is being treated “unfairly” by the prime minister.

“Like Sitaram Kesri I am also a Dalit. Why is Modi being unfair to me?” asked Yashwant Sinha in a tweet. He later tweeted: “Since the dim-witted have not understood my joke yet, let me clarify. Sitaram Kesri was OBC (bania) not a Dalit. The PM called him Dalit.” and asked, “Should the country have such an ignorant PM?”

PM Modi had on Saturday alleged that Sitaram Kesri, who was from a “Dalit and exploited community“, was not allowed to complete his term as the Congress president so that Sonia Gandhi could take over the reins of the party. PM Narendra Modi had also claimed that Kesri was ousted unceremoniously, “locked in a bathroom” and “thrown out on the footpath”.

“The country knows that Sitaram Kesri, a Dalit, was not allowed to complete his five-year-term as Congress president; he was thrown out of office and into the footpath to make way for Sonia Gandhi as the new party chief,” PM Modi said. At the rally, he also challenged the Congress to appoint someone from the non-Nehru-Gandhi clan as the party President.

Responding to the PM’s allegations, Congress leader Tariq Anwar said that Narendra Modi was “wrong again” as Kesri was not a Dalit but belonged to OBC.

“PM Narendra Modi is again wrong as Kesari ji was not a Dalit, he belonged to ‘vaish’ community. Kesari Ji himself offered to resign from post of Congress President if Sonia ji was ready to take over. At that time I was Sitaram Kesari’s political advisor so I’m aware of it,” Anwar said.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari also rubbished the claims, saying that “Kesri was a Bania OBC from Bihar and not a Dalit.” “However, when has the PM allowed facts or truth to stand in the way?” he tweeted.
