New Delhi: The main event of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2020 will take place in Leh, the capital of the newly created union territory of Ladakh, news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Wednesday, quoting officials of the AYUSH Ministry. The International Day of Yoga, also known as International Yoga Day or simply Yoga Day, is celebrated annually on June 21. New Delhi’s iconic Rajpath hosted the main event of the first Yoga Day, in 2015, while Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi was the host for last year’s ceremony. The ceremony this year will witness PM Modi perform various Yoga asanas based on the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP). It is likely to be attended by 15,000-20,000 people. “The event of International Day of Yoga 2020 promises to be unique and different since such a large congregation for yoga will be taking place in a high altitude location like Leh for the first time,” PTI quoted AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik as saying. Programmes for various events on Yoga Day have already been prepared by industry bodies like CII, FICCI, ICS and educational bodies like CBSE, NCERT, UGC and DAV.
The AYUSH Ministry is the nodal body which oversees the annual IDY celebrations. The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) will organise the event for Delhi along with the ministry.
The main events of Yoga Day in 2016, 2017 and 2018 were held in Chandigarh, Lucknow and Dehradun respectively.
