New Delhi, Dec 13: With an aim to check state’s notorious land and mining mafia and curb organised crimes, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday approved the draft of a bill on the lines of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The draft of the Uttar Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act (UPCOCA) was approved during a cabinet meeting which was chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The bill, which is likely to be tabled during Winter Session of Uttar Pradesh Assembly, has provisions for stringent punishment to tackle mafia and goonda raj in the state.
“The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has approved proposal for UPCOCA. The bill will be presented in the state Assembly. This is being done to combat land mafia, mining mafia and organised crimes in the state,” senior minister Sidharth Nath Singh said. “The rule of law is the top priority of the government and for this it is essential that those indulging in mafia, goonda activities and disturbing peace insociety are identified and a special drive is launched against them…the bill is being brought with this purpose in mind,” state power minister Shrikant Sharma told reporters.
The minister said that draft of the proposed bill has been prepared in cosultation with the law department.
UP Crime Free: Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath had recently claimed the crime graph has gone down considerably in his state after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed government in the state in March. He claimed that investors are now returning to ‘crime-free’ UP.
“The criminals were ruling the roost in the previous regime due to which investors were migrating from UP. Now, after formation of the BJP government, they are returning, as criminals are being sent to their ‘right place’ (jail),” he said during a public gathering recently. “There used to be riots in the previous SP regime but after the BJP came to power, riots have stopped and the state has become ‘riot-free’,” he added.
While claiming that law and order situation has improved in the state, Yogi Adityanath had said criminals will be either jailed or killed in encounters in the state.
“Uske liye do hi jagah hongi phir. Ya toh pradesh ke jail honge. Ya phir police ki mutbhed mein Yamraj ka ghar uski jagah hogi (Either they will be sent to jail or killed in police encounters and sent to Yamraj’s house),” Adityanath had said.
