Lucknow, Mar 1: The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, had organised a mass wedding in Auraiya district on February 8 where the brides were given various gifts. However, the newly-wed brides from the district alleged that the ornaments they were given at their mass wedding were fake. The brides wrote a letter to the District Magistrate and alleged they were cheated by the administration. They said they were promised silver ornaments but given anklets and toe rings made of iron. This came to light when some women took the ornaments to goldsmiths, who pronounced them to be fake and made of iron. Calling the incident a scam, the victims have demanded an investigation. The government had said it spends Rs 35,000 on every couple that gets hitched at these community marriages. Under the Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivaah Yojana, women from poor families who get married in a state-sponsored mass wedding receive various gifts like clothes and simple jewellery. CM Yogi Adityanath had announced the mass marriage policy for poor girls with an aim to discourage the practice of dowry.
