Mumbai, Jan 26: Cricketer Yusuf Pathan’s brother-in-law will contest BMC election 2017 on All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) ticket. Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM on Monday released first list with 18 candidates for BMC elections 2017. The AIMIM list features Umar Saad who is brother-in-law of cricketer Yusuf Pathan. Umar Saad will be contesting from ward number 208 which is in Byculla and falls under AIMIM MLA Waris Pathan’s constituency.

“Umar Saad has been associated with AIMIM for a long time. He has been given ticket because he is a party worker and not because he is a relative of cricketer Yusuf Pathan,” AIMIM leader Waris Pathan told India.com. The AIMIM legislator also said that talks are on with Nizamuddin Rayeen, who recently quit the Congress party alleging discrimination. According to party leaders, long time Congress corporator, Waqarunnisa Ansari will be joining the AIMIM.

Waris Pathan said the next list of the AIMIM for the BMC elections 2017 will be out in 2-3 days. An interesting electoral battle will be seen in ward number 211 where the AIMIM has fielded Adil Quresh, son of Mubin Qureshi. He will take on Samajwadi Party leader in the BMC, Raees Shaikh. The first list of the AIMIM covers areas of Sion and Dharavi, where the party has given a ticket to two women who are not from the Muslim community.

AIMIM has been trying its best to present big show in the upcoming BMC polls. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also visited Mumbai to kickstart party’s campaign. Addressing a public rally in Byculla on January 2, Owaisi said, “Despite having a budget of Rs 37, 000 crore for this year, the civic body has failed to use the funds appropriately. Many schools and hospitals in Mumbai are in poor condition. The government has fooled us by making huge promises and failing to fulfil them.”

Polling in the 227 wards of the BMC will be held on February 21. The results will be declared on February 23.
