The Gujarat Assembly elections 2017 were held in two phases. Polling for the first phase was conducted on December 9 in 89 out of 182 seats of Saurashtra and South Gujarat regions with 977 candidates in the fray. A total of 851 candidates are in the fray for 93 seats in the final phase of Gujarat elections today. The final results of Gujarat Assembly elections will be declared on December 18. For the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the election in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state is a battle of prestige. On the other hand, the Congress, under party’s president-elect Rahul Gandhi, is trying hard to wrest power. In 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections, the Congress had won 57 whereas the BJP registered the victory on 119 seats. However, the grand old party was left with 43 MLAs after over dozen of its legislators left the party.
Assembly elections in Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh were held on November 9. The result for the Assembly election in Himachal Pradesh will be announced on December 18. Both the Congress and the BJP fielded candidates on all 68 seats in Himachal Pradesh Assembly. While the Congress declared incumbent Chief Minister Virbhadhra Singh as its chief ministerial candidate, the BJP nominated Prem Kumar Dhumal for the top post. In the 2012 elections to the 68-member assembly, the Congress won 36 seats, BJP 26 and Independents six.
